Straight answer

Who can adopt?

People over 18 can adopt, regardless of marital status, as long as they are at least 16 years older than the adoptee. Adopting a child or adolescent requires qualifying at the Children's Court (Vara da Infância) and joining the national registry, with exceptions such as stepparent adoption, when the stepfather or stepmother adopts the child of their spouse or partner. Adoption of an adult is also done through the courts.
